vidal communications takes the slam!

May 1, 2010 - Coconut Grove, Florida

The World’s Funnest Fishing Tournament lived up to its name this past weekend as 137 teams from across the state vied for the title.  With the open bars, great food and constant parties, it’s easy to see why the event has a cult-like following.

The tournament starts out with the Captain’s Party and Luau. Team show up to register, grab their shirts and have a good time.  The authentic hula show adds to the festivities, but the party is about reviewing the rules.  This year the rules committee came up with an interesting way to visually display the rules to help the anglers remember.

The fishing started on Saturday with one of the most exciting events of all of fishing, a Bimini Start.  All 137 teams show up early in the morning just outside of Coconut Grove to get ready for the shotgun start and the beginning of fishing.  The City of Miami Fire Boat was also on-hand to help keep the boats in check and to add to the excitement with their pumps full force.  And then the time comes, all the boats tear off in search for dolphin.

When the boats return, they are greeted by the Star-Brite boat wash crew ready to get their boats spotless.  Teams in Mercury powered Sea Vee’s get preference, but all the boats get washed.  The dock is a beehive of activities with open bar, the weigh-ins, Chevy test vehicles, and sponsor displays.  Friends, family and fans come down to check out the teams and their catches.

This year the fishing was quite slow and only 4 fish in the 30-pound class and 1 in the 40-pound class.  That does not change the fact that the winning teams would take home over $30,000 dollars!  When the weigh-ins were closed and the fish were tallied it was Team Vidal Communications fishing aboard “Top Fin” who took home the title with a 60.60 pound aggregate weight.  The single heaviest dolphin honor went to “The Hook Up” with a nice 49.30 pound bull.
Second place was “Hicks & Spics” with 57 pounds followed by “Team Cas ablanca” with 53.50 pounds who edged out “El Capitan” by only .10 pounds.  Fifth place went to “The Hook Up.”  The top female angler was Tracey Preston with a 17-pound dolphin.  Her team “Fly Girls” fished on the venerable “Thomas Flyer.”  The top junior angler was Alex Garcia on “Hicks & Spics” who reeled in a 32.30 pound dolphin.
The tournament has other non-fishing categories with winners:

And then all the prizes and cash is handed out there is only one thing left. The ever-popular Miss Hotfish Bikini Contest hosted by DJ Laz from Power-96.  No narration needed so we’ll just post a few images.
